The Arkansas Scholastic Press Association (ASPA) named Karla Sprague, yearbook and newspaper adviser at Har-Ber High School in Springdale, AR, as the recipient of the Walter J. Lemke award during its annual awards banquet held April 20.
Lemke was the founder of ASPA, then called Arkansas High School Press Association (1929), and established the University of Arkansas’s journalism department. The award named for him honors others who have championed the rights of student journalists and provided opportunities for scholastic press programs to develop and flourish.
Ms. Sprague has served ASPA as President-elect, President and currently serves as leader of the President School. ASPA President Andrew Young noted that not only has Sprague advocated for legislation to protect student journalists in our state, but also worked with the University of Arkansas during the organization's transition and helped install our new Executive Director, Renette S. McCargo.
The Wildcat yearbook was also recognized as one of the most outstanding student publications in the state by being inducted into the ASPA Hall of Fame and named All Arkansas. Members of both the yearbook and newspaper staffs received awards for the their contributions to their publications.

On behalf of Mr. McMullen and his students, we would like to thank everyone that attended Saturday’s event. We apologize for ending the festivities early, but the weather had become too turbulent to continue the flights safely.
Our sincere thanks go to Camron McAhren & FlyARH, Daniel Hughes & Summit Aviation, EAA Chapter 732 - Fayetteville, Northwest Arkansas Corvette Club, Springdale Fire Dept. , Elizabeth Resh & Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Laci Prince & Arkansas Air and Military Museum, NWA Flying Club, Jordyn Haught & FlyOz, Civil Air Patrol - Rogers Wing, Aviation Institute of Maintenance - Kansas City Campus, and many others!
We are extremely proud of our young aviators. Everything you see in this picture was the result of their hard work. It took months of planning, collaboration, emails, phone calls, and face-to-face visits, and they did all of it and more. They have set the standard for our future aviators to follow here at SPRINGDALE PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
Let’s do this again later this Fall!
